the thing is where would you release them. I thought of this for my brothers wedding. It would look stunning but think of the fish. My solution was that one person at each table take them home. BUT with the drinking that's involved at weddig i'm sure they will end up in a drain or somewhere they should not be!!! lol
A good idea but not practical..

No! Don't use goldfish! They are actually more sensitive to poor water conditions than you may think... which means you may have "floaters" instead of swimmers. And you can't just release goldfish anywhere; they'll die. In fact, you can't move ANY kind of fish from one type of water to another without careful planning! (And please note: some people may not appreciate the whole "live" centerpiece idea. Children may dump trash or food items in the water, or guests may accidentally tip them over.)
If you MUST use fish, I would suggest the heartier Beta fish. They are soooo beautiful, and they do not require special filters or heaters. (Just some room to move around, Beta food and dechlorinated water!) You could give the whole "centerpiece" away to your wedding party or to members of your family. Or you could "donate" the fish to a local school or office. But you will have to arrange everything in advance to be sure these fish were guaranteed good homes....
Honestly, I really think you're better off with something else... like floating candles in colorful fish shapes... or just skip the whole fish thing all together! If you're thinking "beach," you could go with colored sand, candles and shells. If you're thinking "unique," there are plenty of options out there!

Hi i have been looking at these center pieces also as im getting married next year, as we have fish we were thinking of using then but i felt horrid as they dont have much room to swim and they probabley not enough oxygen. I would only get them if i could keep the fish afterwards as we do have a fish tank, But when you say releasing them. I hope you dont mean into a local pond. As they are for the home and will need food. So unless you can sell them to a local fish shop or something or to relative or keep them yourself i dont think its a good idea. Why no try them artificial fish that look and move like real fish. Then you wont feel guilty.

DON"T DO IT.
I know someone who tried it- and it was horrible... all the goldfish died and we had to dump them and the water down the toilet..... it was a mess. We got to the tables and dead goldfish everywhere. Goldfish are very sentive and die really easily due to water, heat, being moved around, the glass not being perfect (like if you didn't clean them all perfectly by hand and got all the soap out).
You can do some great things with water- crystal, glass an fake fish..... they even have nice gel candels with fish scences in them.
I won't use anything alive for a wedding.... it's not practical and it can be cruel to the fish or animal.

Where would you "release" them? Most goldfish can't survive in ponds/lakes, etc. So that would be cruel to release them into an enviroment where they can't live, don't use a living thing for a simple decoration. If you want to, get betas instead in small bowls (you can only put 1 to a bowl) and have guests take those home as favors.

I don't think this is a nice idea. I'd worry about things being put in the fishbowls on the tables - if you're guests get drunk they may put drinks and food in the water and that could harm the fish. Also, goldfish won't live in the wild in the UK, so by releasing them you'd be condemning them to death - and that would be cruel. So, don't do it. Think of another idea for your decoration.

Goldfish are live creatures needing care, not simply table decorations. Where do you plan to release them? You need to think through carefully what you are going to do with them after the event. You might make arrangements to donate them to a school, a pet store or to some people you know would care for them. There might even be guests at the wedding who would like to take one home to look after.

Goldfish can be tricky and may require a lot of attention such as keeping them out of the reach of children, using water that has been standing for a while to be sure the chlorine has evaporated, feeding, transporting them to the reception, etc. What would you do if they died before or during the reception. Lot's to consider but do-able.

That's a common centerpiece during the summer but most couples let the guests take the fish and the bowls home so the guests can take care of fishes. I highly doubt the fishes will survive if you "release" them...

Mmmmmm, lovely idea. Nothing says 'celebration of our new life together' like killing a couple of dozen goldfish by keeping them in a completely inhumane environment for the duration of your wedding reception.
I suppose you want a butterfly release too?
