Truthfully, much more than 3 megapixels is practically overkill for most digital camera consumers. The average consumer will only print 4X6 prints with the occasional 5X7 or 8X10, if they even print them out at all. 3 megapixels is more than enough to create good looking pictures at this size. But just as any technological toy, companies feel they need to overimprove on this and market these "MEGA" megapixel cameras, and consumers feel they need them because they must always have the biggest and best. I fall victim to this myself, even though I know this, I still have a 6 and an 8 megapixel camera. And I am one of those people that does not print my pictures, I simply view them on the screen. Way overkill!!!
There are certain features on a camera that are worth paying for. For instance, I chose my 6 megapixel camera, not for the pixels, but for the image stabilization capabilities. And my 8 megapixel camer is a digital SLR that has a lot of benefits as far as it's similarities to a film camera. Think about what features are important to you in a camera, ie camera size, type of memory card, ease of use, and look for those features. Most camera companies have lines of cameras that all have the same exact features, but go up in megapixel and price. So, for the lowest price model, you are still getting all the fetures and quality, but less megapixel that you likely don't need. I'd look into a Canon or Nikon, they are my best recommendations.

Megapixels are most important for when you're blowing a picture up. More megapixels, the more detailed the picture as it gets larger.

5 mp are the best for 4X6 and up to 8X10
if you want to the option to crop or blowup a picture to anything bigger then 10 X 15 then 8 - 10mp would be needed
but if you dont plan to blow up your picture, i would recommend 5 to 6 mp even thoug you could pass with 3 mp (but ive seen pretty awful quality in 3mp and ive also seen good picture quality with a 3mp camera)

Unless you're blowing your pictures up to poster size, any more than 3 MP is a waste.

Well, it depends on your application and specific need. If you are going to be printing 4x6 or 5x7 then 3 to 4 megapix is fine.
If you are into large images and prints then I suggest you go for 5 to 8 megapix.
