A Visa is an endorsement made by an authorized representative of one country upon a passport issued by another, permitting the passport holder entry into or transit through the country making the endorsement.

Basically, any stamp in your passport is a visa that allows you to travel. A work Visa is a stamp that goes in your passport that allows you to work in a foreign country for a specified period of time.

The Visa Card took it's name from this concept. The Visa credit card is a "passport" that gives you credit endorsed by the issuing bank of the card.
