They don't get much "free time". Usually, when training is done for the day, they're dog tired. They still have to shower and get ready for the next day. Lights out (Army here) is 9pm. They don't get weekends. Training goes on then too. Sunday they are given some "free time". They attend religious services. They do their laundry. Most try to write home. They also go to the PX for their basic supplies....toiletries and so on. Even on weekends, lights out is 9pm.

When I was in basic in 90, there was not much 'free' time... and what little there was was spent in just a couple of ways...

1) Writing letters
2) Catching a 10 minute power nap
3) Reading a newspaper, if you could get a hold of one
4) Getting a little silly and joking around with your platoon mates

The free time would come usually during meal time (but only in the field), just before or after shower time, or just before church services were offered on Sundays

When I went to Basic training we didn't have much free time. What free time we had we showered, wrote a letter home, shined boots, got uniform ready for next day. Cleaned our wallockers, and once a week we were marched to the PX to get personal items, being closely watched by the Drill Sargent to make sure we didn't buy anything were weren't suppose to buy, and get hair cuts.

Not a lot of free time in basic. Time for writing a quick letter home. Mostly spent squaring away your locker. Polishing boots, getting your uniform together.........

I done my Basic Traing in 1982, so I sure times have changed, but we went to the base clubs, or just went out on the town.
