I think that chipped teeth and infections are the main hazards. I'm sure that many people get tongue piercings and have no problems at all, but the risk factors involved are higher than for other forms of body piercing. Worst case scenario is that your tongue develops an infection, swells and blocks your airway. I have also read of a case where the infection travelled to the brain and caused brain damage.

If you decide to go ahead my advice is make sure you get it done by someone who is a real pro, don't get it done on the cheap.

If the tongue split in two that means the piercer used a too thin gauge for the barbell and pierced way close to the tip of the tongue...and that the person with the piercing tore it on something.

Find a reputable piercer and make sure to ask lots of questions and feel comfortable first.

I got my tongue pierced 10 years ago and still have it.... I have no chipped teeth, I don't speak with a lisp and my tongue didn't split in two.

It hurt for a few days like a sore muscle (the tongue is a muscle) and within a few days I was back to normal. Most people talk funky and have problems eating because the barbell they use to pierce your tongue is really long.. once you swap to a shorter one, you'll be totally fine.

I had mine done a couple of years ago and I love it. It was less painful than getting my belly done actually. Just afterwards it gets a bit sore and have a little trouble talking. I could nt eat very much for about two weeks, drank a lot of chocolate milk through a straw and cut everything up really small. You kind of have to work food around your mouth before u swallow and some of it gets stuck around ur bar. I think the hardest things to eat are rice or Mars bars. The caramel sticks a lot! Good luck.

It is also a nice way to carry bacteria into your bloodstream, some studies ar suggesting that it may lead to early heart disease. Alot of the things they are worried about can't be proven or disproved, some tattoo artist in my area have already banned tongue piercing at their shops. They just doesn't feel it is safe enough for their clients.

It will hurt like crazy getting it pierced - your tongue's a muscle remember? But that can be fun.

And you probably will speak strangely, its noticeable especially in the first couple of months, you should pay attention to try speak properly.

Eating is not a problem - your body will tell you what it will and won't tolerate. You won't starve thats for sure.

And you can always take it out if you don't like it, no one's forcing you to keep it. So why not try it out and see for yourself. Ater that, you decide.

My daughter secretly had one installed (I use install since it was
not done my any competent person) and she managed to hide
it from her mother for almost a year. However, since she was
living with me at the time, it was impossible to hide as she was
unable to eat properly nor speak without a slur. Once placed you
can‘t take it out otherwise the pierce will heal. Now to answer
your question, it is awkward to eat for about to weeks and you
must mouthwash several times a day for healing to take place.
Don‘t do it, there are more headaches than joy.

No it wont split in 2, that is an old wifes tale.
If you make sure the piercer numbs it, it wont hurt at all. I didnt feel mine.
THe eating differs between people, my friend was back eating pizza within an hour, personally it took me about 3 days to get back to normal.
And I dont have a lisp.
