Broken blood vessels on the surface of the eye (subconjunctival hemorrhages) are common and usually harmless. They appear as bright red patches on the white part of the eye. They can occur suddenly and without injury to the eye. In many cases, no cause can be determined. However, certain medications and herbal supplements can increase the risk of this type of bleeding. These include:

Blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin and aspirin
Ginseng
Ginkgo
Garlic
Ginger
St. John's wort
Cayenne
Subconjunctival hemorrhages typically cause no signs or symptoms other than eye redness. No specific treatment is needed. The redness usually disappears within 10 days.

If you have recurrent subconjunctival hemorrhages or other bleeding, consult your doctor. Be sure to tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you take.

If it is bllod red and only one eye It is probably a subconjunctival heme or a broken blood vessel in the eye. Usually from coughing hard or accidentally poking yourself in the eye during sleep. Also people on blood thinners are more likely to get them. If you eye is red or pink it is probably an infection and should be looked at by an eye doctor.

Some sort of irritation, maybe you got dirt in it or something. Or you could have a bacteria in there. If it is painful, particularly in light, it may be pink eye. I got pink eye from just a TINY tear in my contact lens... So be careful, eyes are sensitive and fragile. If it gets worse you should probably go to an eye doctor.

Irritation of some kind; you may have been bitten by a mosquito in the night. Or an allergen of some kind got in that eye. You might want to wash your pillow; mites can create havoc.
Have you changed your detergent?

1) This isnt the place to get medical advice - please see a medical professional.

2) Infection, Irritation, Physical shock, Blood pressure all can cause these symptoms - some are more serious than others but most are nothing to worry about - trouble is you dont know what, so please re-read 1) above again.
