Yes I have three of my own. I also volunteer with a local adoption group and take in fosters dogs. Greyhounds can live 14+ years and generally retire between 2-5 years old. Contrary to the above poster they are not hyper dogs. As sprinters they can sleep 18-20 hours per day, earning them the nickname 'the 45mph couch potato'.

Yes, I've had my first 2 greys for 6 years now and my third one (who was also my first foster) for 5 years. They are without doubt the best behaved and quietest dogs I've ever had. Two of them are great with everything including cats, but my little female has a highly developed prey instinct and will never be cat safe. All of them love kids, one of my males has been to day care and schools a few times to talk about greyhounds.

The only down side to them, and all the sight hounds, is that you can't let them off the leash in unfenced areas, but they don't seem to mind at all as long as they have a yard to run in and of course, they go out for walks every day (unless it's too cold!).

Greyhounds are NOT hyper in general. That's why they are reccommended as great apartment dogs. Outside, they will run and will need a leash or a confined area for sure, but inside, they are usually couch potatoes.

There are lots of them in need of homes since greyhound racing is so big in some areas. Try contacting a rescue group and they can give you plenty of info on temperament and can maybe even reccommend a particular one for you.

The person who said they are hyper does not know what they are talking about. Greyhounds are very laid back and known as couch potatoes. There are a few living down the street from me and they are so well behaved.
