three possibilities.

one. your harddrive is dead. check the connectors, with a little luck its only that one of them has worked itself loose. happened to me a few times already...

two. you deleted your system from your harddrive. or someone else did... maybe a virus.

three... you have a disk or CD in a drive and the system tries to boot from there, instead from the hard drive.

This would indicate the the files required to boot your computer are either corrupted or missing entirely.
