I think the depression came first and that is what started your addiction. Now your addiction keeps you depressed.

All the answers before me are correct. Depression came first. It is very typical to find that people who are depressed or have some other mental health issues also have some form of addiction. The reason is that on some level the person knows that they are ill. The addiction is a form of self-medication. Often, this appears to work in the short term, but over a long time these "treatments" fail and cause additional problems and/or exacerbate the original problem.

Glenn M is correct as well. It is very difficult to avoid the obstacles and potholes in the road ahead if you are always looking in the rear-view mirror. Yet, you must be aware of what is behind you, it can help a great deal in deciding how best avoid something in the path ahead. You must also be sure it stays behind you.

Sincerely,
Terry

Addiction is when you find a substance or behavior that soothes the pain and fear associated with depression, and you use it to the point where it stops soothing the pain and fear, and starts adding to the depression. Addiction is the end product of self medication. Depression begets addiction which begets depression.
