I believe the only way to know God is to know him personaly. God is not a religion and the church is the body of Christ it is not a religion. Many people allow others to do there religious thinking for them it is good to seek God on your own through prayer and through his word and God will reveal himself and his truth to those who seek him and have value in him. Yes I believe many people know the truth not by claiming a religion but by being a part of the body of Christ.

Solo worship does not work.
(Hebrews 10:25) not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as YOU behold the day drawing near.

how will you know if you are doing everything that Almighty God wants you to do...properly.
Example. (Matthew 24:14) And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.
Do you know what the Good News is?
Are you preaching it?
(Matthew 28:19-20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”
Are you trying to make disciple [ believers in Jesus]? How can you do it alone?

I am also "sick" of all the controversy. But that is no excuse not to diligently search out the truth. And I agree that religion will not save you and that a personal relationship with God is to be desired above all things. But haven't your heard? Didn't you know? That God has revealed Himself to humanity through what He has created (general revelation) and through His dealings with people as recorded in Scripture (special revelation). If you want to know God, start with finding out what He says about Himself in nature and especially in the Bible. Excuse me for saying this, but if you go off and "have a relationship with God that is all [your] own," you might just end up with a god of your imagination. Read the Bible. Pray. Seek Him with al your heart and you will find Him.

That's what I did. I read the Bible cover to cover with no help from anyone. I did not understand everything in there of course at the time, but I understood enough and what I found out steered me in the right direction.

I do exactly the same thing. I was raised Catholic and still believe in the religion, but I have a big problem with the church. I don't think they are following the teachings of Jesus. I pray and read the bible at home. I also try to be the best person I can be.

I agree with avoiding religious controversy, there's really just no point to arguing about it, what Jesus says is absolute law for us. For Muslims, what Mohammed says is absolute law for them. And so on it goes with each religion.

However, may I suggest that you at least get into a group, not necessarily a church group, that can help hold you accountable to yourself? It is so easy to get frustrated, and you need someone (in my case, a group of someone's lol) to help lift you up when you get down, give your mind something to think about that is biblically sound, and a sympathetic ear when you need an outlet.

If not a group, I encourage you to study your relationship, find books that will help you grow. :)

Religion is a man made entity. There are churches out there that don't put the form and fashion of a religion before Jesus. They are few and far between, but you just have to pray that God will lead you to the right one.

There shouldnt be any controversy God calls on us to determine and decide for ourselves not follow blindly some other humans call to God. You can celebrate God with other humankind in fellowship but you are ultimately responsible for your decisions and your life.

Good Luck and God Bless!!

We need no intermediary between ourselves and God except for Jesus whose shed blood gives us the opportunity to be reconciled with God. No need for any one else to pray on your behalf. you may find it useful to discuss things with other people though. Proverbs 18 v1.
Each of us is working out our own salvation and have to stand up and be judged for our conduct individually. so you go for it but keep an open mind and investigate everything before you reject anything.

If Satan could get every person to follow your advice, he would be most pleased. It is his purpose to divide and to conquer, to separate from the herd, to cull out the weak, the young, the old, the outcasts.

For this reason, it is written: And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Hebrews 10:24,25

Prayer and a relationship with God is commendable, and necessary. However, it does not fulfill the gospel commission of the church as outlined in Matthew 28:19,20. In addition, isolation from fellow believers places the person who is isolated in a vulnerable position where he/she can easily be preyed upon by the enemy of souls, the devil. Isolationism opens the way for depression, self reliance, fanaticism and many other dangers. For this reason we are counseled to press together, much like circling the wagons to withstand the assaults of Satan.

Define your beliefs based on your study of the Bible. Find like believers and study and fellowship with them. Continue to grow in the grace of Jesus and the knowledge of the scriptures as revealed to you by the Holy Spirit.
