*Rent an RV then you can stop where you want to and for how long you want to stop. If you want to collect some leaves and nature stuff for craft projects you will have room to store them.*

A train ride would be the most comfortable way to go. Or you could go by motor coach. You can check with your local motor coach charter companies and ask if they have any such tours that you could sign up for.

I work in the transportation industry and a lot of senior groups do these types of tours. So if you don't mind the company of the older generations (always good to hang out with them you can learn a little and hear some great stories) see about signing up with a group that might be doing something like that.

You can also call your local Convention & Visitor Buearu, they may have some suggestions.

Good luck & enjoy...

I live in Alaska. Start here. The lovely fall foliage starts here in August and is just about all gone now. We have just about all the same trees and vibrant fall colors as the rest of the lower 48. You can take a nice train ride to and from Fairbanks and Anchorage. That will give you a pretty tour.

A bus tour, however, I've not heard of a coast-to-coast one so your best bet would be to go through a travel agent who could set up the itinerary for you. Trains are nice, but AMTRAK zooms along the tracks and it wouldn't be as enjoyable sight-seeing wise but you would be more comfortable in that you can walk along the car corridor and get an unit in the sleeper car.

Best bet is to talk to a travel agent, or two, and get some idea of each, then decide which best fits your sense of adventure and time available for the trip.

Good luck, enjoy the trip when you take it, and don't forget the film/digicam for recording those wonderful memories you'll be making!!!

I have always traveled by Pickup Truck with a camper. They can be rented. You stop when you want to stop. The rest camps are available everywhere and they are cheaper than motels. You get to see everything up close, eat at local restaurants if you don't want to cook your own meal. You can cook your own meal antime you want also.

There is a place called Mesa Verde, near 4 corners Southwest corner of colorado. It is a must see if you want to see some outstanding sights. There are ancient Ruins where the Anastasi lived 1100 AD.

Lots of interesting sights on the highway that passes through Flagstaff AZ, Including the Grand Canyon. The Painted Desert and a mile wide Meteor crater. You wish to know more? Write to me.

If you haven't left already, it will probably be after it's peak by the time you get there. The best foliage is in New England. I assumed it would be the same anywhere in the north. I'm now in upper Illinois and quite disappointed in the foliage I've seen. Take a train or plain to NE

The only way you can travel from coast to coast and see the things you have stated is by train or bus or car. Other system of transportation does not provide the view

If you want to see the fall foliage here in the east you better fly over her now because it will move into it's peak in about 10 days. I live in Northern Maryland.

A Train ride will offer you an eye level view, and sometimes a bird's eye view of some of the most beautiful foliage mother earth has to offer. Taking a train allows you to see all the changing trees in their glory throughout the whole countryside from town to country, trees will also be different colors depending on the altitude of the area, how much sunlight they receive, and how cold it is for certain amounts of time during the autumn.

I prefer sightseeing on my Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic, with my wife on the back.
It's like being in the scenery!
I usually plan the route with the Harley Owner Group Trip Planner ® and accommodations through AAA Tour Book.
