Well, yes and no. ;-)
The determining factor is whether they are natural products. Real maple syrup needs refrigeration or it will go moldy. However, other syrups ("pancake" syrup, chocolate or strawberry syrup etc.) need no refrigeration. They are so full of sugar and preservatives that they will live forever. Scary, huh?
Your common or garden variety peanut butter also needs no refrigeration, but again, if it is all-natural, the peanut oil may go rancid if left at room temperature during several weeks of hot weather. Barring extreme heat, even this nut butter is fine in the cupboard. So give over and admit that this time, your girlfriend is right!

I have never put Peanut Butter or Syrup in the fridge. They don't need to be refrigerated as far as I know.

I put syrup in the fridge and then heat it in the microwave when I put it on pancakes or waffles. I don't keep peanut butter in the fridge but I don't think it hurts to put it in there.

I don't see why you would want to. Keep it in a dark cupboard, it should keep just fine.
