I remember hearing, a long time ago, something about putting it in a container of salty water. If it sunk.........................

Just plain water, if it sinks, its fresh, if it floats, toss it. You can smell the shell. If it is bad, you will be able to smell it without cracking the egg.

You are right.

A bad egg will float if placed in a jug of 10% salt water.
A good egg will sink.

Thats what I have heard too. In the UK they have best used by date. If it goes more than a couple of days over that date then I would dump them.

put it in a pot of cold water if it sinks it's good,,,if it floats throw it in the bin.
