America was colonized by several national groups. Spain, France, and Great Britain were the leading nations, although Holland also had a presence in the New York area. Spain settled in what is now approximately the Florida area and the Southwest, France in the farther north (Canada) and the Great Lakes region, and Great Britain from what is now Maine down through the Carolinas.
This colonization began in the 1500's and continued until the 13 British colonies declared their independence from GB in 1776.
General George Washington *was* offered a kingship, but refused. He was elected the new nation's first Presidency.
