I'm not sure about what steinbabe said, because there are people who's job is to train police dogs and then give them to the police for handling. There are K9 trainers and handlers. Sometimes the handlers train their own dogs, but not all the time and I don't think even often. A K9 handler is a policeman, first and foremost, who has been trained himself to handle a K9. The trainers are people who are experts in dog training and are not policemen and don't handle the dogs.

I know of atleast one guy who used to train K9s and give them to the police. He still trains protection dogs though I don't think he works with the force anymore.

I don't know if you can just buy one as a civilian though. I'm pretty sure you have to have some sort of training or license before you can get one, and they are UBER expensive. I'm talking thousands of dollars.

Good luck.

You can buy the dog that is trained to do everything that police K-9 can. You can buy a dog that has police certification from oversea. You cannot get the dog's certification in the state, because you are not a police officer. The Schutzhund is not a police dog. So as any sport dogs. The dog is certified by USPCA. or many police K-9 Association, Department itself, or Many k-9 trainers that certified by departments.
In your case, you just need good protection trained dog. All professionally trained dog has obedience trained as well. Most of them are GSD or Belgian malinois and they are about 2 to 3 years old. They are not cheap.

No. A police dog can only be single handled. This means that nobody else except the person who trained it can command or handle the dog. If for some reason this person cannot keep the dog then it has to be destroyed or it will be dangerous.

NO you can't....These dogs are highly trained. To set the record straight...the training starts as a puppy. Professional trainers begin the training with the basics....once they are good at all those their "handler/partner" is brought in to help finish the training. This last stage is not just to train the dog but to train the officer who will work with the dog....not only to the dogs need trained so do the people who handle them, because if not handled properly these dogs can be dangerous. Once these dogs retire, only people who are trained to handle them are allowed to keep them, most of the time they like to keep them with the handler who has always worked with them...if not them the try to place to dog with someone else who is trained to handle these dogs, like another officer, or trainer. The same goes for military dogs as well.

No.
Dogs trained in this type of work are handled b one person and are not suitable as pets. They do not have the social skills or have not been taught to live as pets they are taught as a working dog and handled as a working dog. This is very different from living in a home and being around lots of people.
This is the difference between a gaurd dog and a family pet.

No you can't. When they retire, they usually go to live with their human partner. Someitmes they go back to their breeder/trainer to be a stud or brood *****, but they are never handed to anyone who is not highly experienced with such an animal.

You can get a Schutzhund trained dog, or even train one in Schutzhund yourself as a member of your local Schutzhund club. These dogs learn everything police dogs learn and best of all, you get to learn it too!

Why would you want a police dog?

Besides that i highly doubt it is. Those dogs if not properly handled could be very dangerous. We used to board a few of them for the local county police and the commands they use MUST BE enforced. Those dogs depend on those commands, it is their structure, their stability and what makes them happy (they aim to please their owners) They can be highly destructive to if not given the proper care. They are in a true sense "working" dogs and can get bored is not allowed to "work".

They are for trained professionals like police. And if you were smart, notice how they're called " POLICE dogs." Police only? Perhaps.

No. Don't do it. They are highly trained animals requiring a LOT of further training & interaction. To get one & not know how to handle it puts your life, your familys lives, and everyone elses lives in danger. They are great & loyal animals. They are trained for a purpose & unles you can proved for them correctly I would suggest you look elsewhere.

You probably can by a similarly trained shutzhund dog --- and a new car will probably cost less.
