We can ask anyone that we need to ask in order to get information about a client, even if that client is a minor. For example, we might call the grandparents if we believe that the juvenile and the parent(s) are not being truthful with us.

When we are doing a PDR (pre-dispositional report), we need information in order to appropriately decide upon the terms and conditions of probation that we recommend to the judge. We get that information by asking questions.

Be pleased that the probation officer does the courtesy of calling the grandparents, in order to do all he/she can to boost support for the custodial mother. Mom can only benefit from kind words and praise from other family members.

A probation officer can ask whomever whatever questions they would like because they are reasonable for knowing the where abouts of their criminal.

yes, they can and normally will contact the grandparents, the school, and at times even neighbors. There main concern is for the child

They can ask whoever they want to make sure the child is doing what he or she is supposed to be doing, and to make sure they are staying out of trouble.

yes they have the right to question family members, friends, teachers, neighbors, students at school, employers, past/present,
co-workers, past co-workers.....
