I honestly don't think you can but there's a little black spot (feels like a chip) in the bottom of the diamond of my engagement ring. I don't think you can feel a flaw in the diamond so I can't imagine what it could be. I tried pushing it out with a sewing needle and nothing? I had it cleaned yesterday and it's still there, beats me! oh and yes I'm sure it's a real diamond....

Its not a stupid question! Yes, diamond's can be chipped. So I've heard anyway. You'd be best to take it back to where you got it from - if you have insurance on it, they will replace it for you. Good luck!

Diamonds can be chipped through wear and tear...this is more likely to happen around an edge not protected by the ring setting. Any build up of dirt that would affect the colour could be cleaned off using an old soft toothbrush and some warm soapy water in a small dish..the bristles would disolve any black specks of dirt. Black marks in a diamond normally are natural inclusions formed in the stone when it was being made in the earth millons of years ago. Diamonds with out these are flawless and their price is very high. Diamonds are graded by their cut, size, colour and clarity on a sliding scale . The more inclusions and the bigger they are the less valuable. Certificates for higher value diamonds point out all the small inclusions and their place on the stone, they are unique and individual markings. Some you can only see with the help of a jewellers loup or microscope, others you can see with the naked eye.. the one in your ring may not have been visible in a shop where all the lights increase the sparkle and in the excitement of buying a ring you do not always have the time to examine it as closely as you can at home.An obvious inclusion will reduce the value of a stone but this is often compensated by a larger size or better general colour...its a balance. In the end you get what you pay for... tthe jeweller you bought it from should be able to go over all this with you and inform you just what it is you are seeing in the stone provided he is reputable.

The only thing that can chip a diamond is a diamond. Or a diamond cutter (which is a diamond). Diamonds are the strongest stones out there. I don't know what the black mark is. It might be something that was in the stone. I'd take it back to the place where the diamond was purchased and have them figure out what it is. Don't do too much too it, because it could void the warranty.

Yes, you can chip a diamond.
For some reason people equate hardness with indestructibility.
Big diamonds are cleaved (chipped) to produce a specific shape that is then processed into a diamond for sale.

Yes, that's a sign of real diamond...but poor quality. Usually if a worker is good, he will take out that black spot while cutting it...you could not do it at home.....no matter it could reduce the size but go to someone who can cut it and take the black spot out....even the size is smaller, value would be higher...

maybe...........I mean you can have a diamond chip made into a ring - so therefore you must be able to 'chip' a diamond! sorry! Get it checked out, maybe it had a flaw to start with, a hairline crack or something??

Are you less worthy as a fiance' with a flawed diamond? Or is your "husband to be" flawed? What is worth more, a perfect diamond, or a perfect marriage?

has it always been there? It could be a flaw which is a piece of carbon, take it to a jewelers and have it looked at.
