No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:

1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.

3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.

4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. - Sigh.. Windows does that, too.

5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. - Yup, Windows does that, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.

So Windows is not a virus.

It's a bug.

No, it is not.

From wikipedia.com:
A computer virus is a self-replicating computer program written to alter the way a computer operates, without the permission or knowledge of the user. Though the term is commonly used to refer to a range of malware, a true virus must replicate itself, and must execute itself. The latter criteria is often met by a virus which replaces existing executable files with a virus-infected copy. While viruses can be intentionally destructive—destroying data, for example—some viruses are benign or merely annoying.

Windows does not replicate itself. It does not install itself or execute without the user's permission.

No.

I know what you're trying to imply, that it sits on your computer and gets larger and larger, causing you lots of hassle but Windows doesn't self-replicate like other computer viruses do.

In fact, you can get computer viruses for free which will gladly make thousands of copies of themselves... Microsoft, on the other hand, charge you money for the privilege of using Windows :)

No, it is an operating system.

It is not a virus because it doesn't replicate itself and spread to other computers.
