I learned Spanish & Chinese, Chinese hasn't been that useful except I used to use it to pick up guys. I thought it would be more useful given the "superpower" thing, but unless you work in international business or plan to go there it's not really worth it. The main problem is that I learned Mandarin and people in the US usually speak Cantonese because they're from Hong Kong (or Taiwanese).

Spanish I use all the time in restaurants, at work, on the street, translating for random people who are trying to get things done, etc, and it's also useful for picking up guys. This is the best one to learn in the USA, honestly. It's the best thing I ever did, and it opens a whole new world to you if you live where a lot of people speak it.

I think Arabic would be useful, too, but then again I thought Chinese would be.

I'm not aware of any huge Polish speaking populations outside of Poland or Chicago, so it might be fun, but not very useful for other places.

...ALso started to learn Russian, and have had more opportunity to use it than Chinese.

You already speak English. I am French and speak four languages incliding English. I would advise you to take Spanish as it is an easier language than French. It's a european language largely used in America besides English. If looking for difficulty, think Chinese or Arabic but these languages are already spoken by the majority of living people but will not bring you the satisfaction you expect after such a hard work. Bon courage. Amitiés.

Polish Language may be of most use but it depends where is your location at the moment. I would suggest learning Polish if you stay in Uk because there is more and more polish people there.

I don't know where you live, but Polish doesn't sound the way to go.
Spanish is very useful, however emerging markets in China and the vast number of potential consumers there would make standard mandarin a very good choice.
Plus, mandarin is spoken in Malaysia, Singapore, and by the overseas Chinese community in other parts of the world.
About 850 million people speak mandarin.

Is there a country you go to for holidays? Start with that, and if you want to, you can learn others. Don't just pick a language at random. You could also learn the language of someone you like if they are from another country.

But don't learn bad language, that wouldn't be nice.

I think you first have to ask yourself WHY you are learning a new language. If it is just to enrich yourself then there are thousounds to chose from. Why not Polish as many poles are working in countrys all over Europe and im sure you would have no problem finding peple to talk to. if is for a reason such as wanting to travel, then where? For the far east learn Chinnese surely whereas as south america learn Spainsh. if its for work then Japanesse, and Spanish seem to be the way to go. just go for it. why not. it is a great way to enrich your life and opens different oppurtunties to you.

Spanish because it is the second most widely spoken language
(not counting Chinese) in the world and it is halfway into Portuguese
and Italian. In other words, speaking Spanish you could understand
Portuguese and Italian (spoken slowly) and it would be easy to learn
these other languages. This would be a great help when travelling
and in your curriculum.

not sure what you know now but if you only know English then i would have to say Spanish would be a good choice since 1 in 8 Americans is from a Spanish speaking country, but polish speaking people may be more around in your area so for you that may be a better choice

If you fancy learning a language, primarily for the purpose of interecting with MORE people then these are the list of languages based on the number of people speaking it, as their native tongue:

>> Chinese (850 million as NATIVE speaker)
>> Hindi (around 500 million as NATIVE speaker)
>> Spanish (around 460 million as NATIVE speaker)
>> English (around 340 million as NATIVE speaker)
>> Portuguese (around 250 million as NATIVE speaker)

Now, don't think that learning Chinese would ONLY limit you to use the language in China OR learning Hindi would ONLY limit you to interact with Indians in India, since Chinese & Indian people are spread across the world.

The same goes for Spanish (not only in Spain but also in parts of USA along with South American countries) and Portuguese (both in Portugal & in South American countries).

It depends on where you live and the reason you want to learn a new language If it's for your personal enjoyment then choose whichever makes you happy :) I love French.

Now if it's more of a business thing... I would go for spanish, especially you live in the US. Other options are chinese, japanese or arabic.
