Actually was the quote far from the truth? If you're accused of being a violent person who loses his temper, and you vehemently deny it and punch the accuser in the nose -- haven't you proven his point?

The Muslim reaction to the quote was disproportionate to the Pope's passing reference. If Christians rioted and killed every time they were mischaracterized (say, on TV sitcoms) our cities would all be in ruins.

The Muslim response certainly proved that what the Pope said was absolutely true.

Why would you think the Pope had no knowledge of the reality of Islam?

He hit the nail right on the head!

I really can't help wondering if you know exactly what the pope said. If you don't, and frankly your question leaves me in doubt about it, then you are putting yourself in an awkward position criticizing hm 'without real knowledge of the reality of what he said'.
I am no follower of the pope, but hey! he did not insult Islam. check out the facts.

It was a quote from a Byzantine ruler who had fought the Muslims, of his time. He was pointing out that others had fought Extremist Muslims in the past and what those people thought and what the media shows us now.

But as far as having "real" knowledge of any religion... all sides say things about the others religions without any real knowledge of it... or the person they are talking to/about.

As the True Word of the Lord says: "By their fruits ye shall know them." And their fruits are terrorism, violence, intolerance. If Muslims are a peaceful religion as they state then it is way past time they demanded an end to this inexcusable violence and tolerated no more the select few who are responsible, for it is well within their power to end this. As also the Bible says; "Am I become your enemy because I tell you the truth?"
