Well it's "Samui", not "Sunui", so that may make a difference!

Ko Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, some 700 km south-east of Bangkok and about 80 km from the eastern coastline of southern Thailand.

Theres only one Koh Samui ant Koh Samet its not hard to get confused rele. Loads of my family live in Thailand, I'm half Thai and we go all the time. Koh (which means Island in English) Samui is in the south of the country and its home to one of Thailand's most active night lives, its also got some of the best restaurants in the south of the country, if you want to stay somewhere cheap on the island i suggest Tradewinds its like one of those places where your have separate little hut things which have just your room..chalet i think they're called, its on Chaweng Beach, have fun back packing xx

Koh Samui located in the South of Thailand. Once in those acquantancies you should also consider to visit Krabi, Phuket. From Phuket you can visit Koh Phi Phi (or what remains of it following the Tsunami), and various island which include James Bond Island. There are various excursions which you may want to take. One day excursion (which includes trips round the islands and lunch) costs approximately £40stg. Not bad. In Phuket you may also want to rent a car, there they drive on the right and it is very safe.

i think the one near bangkok is you are talking about it Koh Samet. i went to Thailand a few years ago and travelled around to several months. i visited many islands and cities, and i would say Koh Samui was one of the worst places (and most expensive) that i stayed. it was very 'touristy' and too busy / full. i only stayed 2 nights and moved on. my favourite island by far was koh Tao. It is very quiet but the huts are on the beach and it is a proper idyllic island with lots of diving and enough people so you don't feel lonely. also went snorkeling in koh Phi Phi on a beach called something like Luke. i would recommend that too. i wish i was going back!

I think you are confuse between Koh Samui in the South and Koh Samet by Bangkok.

They are both on this map:

They are both nice placs to visit. Depends what you are into really. But Koh Samet probably is too quiet for you at a guess.
