Why bother, let them work it out.

Think of something really fun for them to do with you (that doesn't involve the TV)

Go to a park/playground, play a board game, do a puzzle. Get them to help you make dinner (not just setting the table - let them actually crack the eggs, do the stirring etc.)

They'll probably be so delighted that you're playing with them they won't notice the TV isn't working.

This probably won't work with older children, but being older I think they'll work out for themselves that the TV is broken again and you won't need to explain it to them.

Tell them it's family night. Cadoo is a good kids game (fun for adults too as you can team up with the kids and get really competitive) Other than that light loads of candles and say it's a black out, it's amazing what they'll believe.

What sort of a parent are you, if you need advice on something simple like that! Whos in charge in your house, seems you are worried about telling them.
