I've always been a little leery of German shepherds myself, partly because my mother was nearly attacked by one as a child....I prefer labradors, who nearly always seem to have an amiable personality!!

No particular breed of dog is inherantly a mean dog. I'm not saying there is no such thing as breed characteristics but if a dog is raised with kindness and obediance training, and is properly socialized, chances are they will be reasonably "nice". You do need to respect their individual personalities though. Some dogs are naturally people dogs and some aren't. Some dogs are naturally obedient and some aren't. That being said, I wouldn't get a pure bred German Shepherd as a first dog because they do get big and strong and you seem to have doubts about your ability to handle one should something go awry.

Any dog no matter the breed can be mean. What exactly are you looking for? A guard dog? If so any large to medium breed will be a good ,loyal watch dog as long as they are treated with kindness, love and respect. Any breed of dog can be mean if hurt, mistreated , or ignored.

Nope, like 90 lb unless you going for a puppy mill bred for size line and thats a recipee for bad hip heartbreak. They are the same temperment as a black &tan shepard. THe one in my Obedience class clearly thinks her mom can't tie her shoes without the dog helping.

Train your pet. Love your pet. And the most important thing is to socialize your pet with other animals, big and small. Never be aggressive with your dog, especially as a puppy. The earlier you go for training the better.

In my experience they are not mean dogs. I had one and they are really smart dogs. Although with any animal their all not the same. It would have to do with how it was raised. If their given lots of love and kindness their more out to be gentle dogs.

No - if it is trained right, they are great dogs (just like all breeds). The colour of the dog does not affect it's personality!

if you know how much they supposedly weigh then you should be smart enough to know a black shepherd is not a seperate breed just a color so they are like any other shepherd as far as temperment.....go to AKC and do research on the breed itself not a color
