The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first sign a species is achieving sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods. Religion has outlived it's usefulness and now posses a threat to the survival of humanity. Considering that most have as their end goal, the destruction of the world, they must be feared and if not marginalized, eradicated for the protection of us all.

The church today is in crisis, seeking to realize its own relevance, yet wishing to keep its traditions in the face of a drastically changing global village.

Traditionally, the church has been a source of healing, learning, socialization and social life, defender of human rights or tool of the state. The church can be many things to many people. Today it has to find its role in the unfolding internet culture, the global village, even in the survival of the planet and its ailing environments.

The church or Church, as with the government in a democracy, is the people. I will say it again. The church is the people. What the people want for their society, the church should be striving for, defending, even analyzing and reviewing. The church can be anything the people want it to be. If the people don't want the church anymore, then its role is reduced to nil. However, if the people choose to direct the church toward unfulfilled needs, new contingencies, and old but still unsolved problems, then the church can once again play a vital part in the life and growth of society.

The role of church on society can be a good thing, and can be a bad thing. Churches can teach whatever they want, so if they teach hate, chances are you learn hate. If they teach love, chances are you learn love. Either way church is just a building, it's the people inside that create an impact on society.

The Church is charged by God with guiding and enlightening society, as well as all world governments.

The Church actually managed to accomplish that, prior to about the 15th century.

The two major roles of the church in society are the preaching of the gospel to the world and the vindication of God's character before the surrounding universe.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:19,20

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come Matthew 24:14

To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God Ephesians 3:10

That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:27

These text show that God's church will be in the world until the end of the world. The purpose of the church is to take the gospel to the world and be perfect, even as God is perfect. This is accomplished by allowing the Holy Spirit to perfect our characters to the pattern of Jesus Christ so that we may take on the "divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4) Of course, none of this perfecting of character earns us eternal life. That is only accomplished through faith in Jesus as our substitute. However, faith without works is dead. Therefore, true Christians will want to keep the laws of God. "If you love me keep my commandments"

The idea that the church will somehow be raptured out of the world just when the world needs the church the most is fallacious. The church is to be without spot and wrinkle, to be presented before the universe as an example of the redeeming love of Jesus Christ who not only saves us from our sins (justification), but who also gives us victory over every sinful tendency (sanctification) This, in spite of the wicked state of the world around us, with the devil going about like a raging lion, seeking whom he may devour. This will show God's manifold wisdom to the universe by showing his power to save sinners and transform sinners in spite of a world that is violent and fulll of licentiousness.

The persecutions that will fall on the church during the mark of the beast time will only serve to strengthen the church's resolve to trust in God alone and His promises that never fail. This will be the trial that makes pure gold by burning off all the dross from God's church.

God does not take his people out of trials and tribulations. but promises to go through the trials with them. (See the fiery furnace in the book of Daniel)

The rapture and the glorious second coming are one and the same event. Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation. There will be no second chance when Jesus comes again.

If they have to play any role let there be open debates between the major faiths. So that it will help the ordinary people to choose the best for themselves. And open their minds about the true Creator.

Apparently it's role is to showcase the terminally stupid and profoundly gullible.
That's why I immediately shred any resume that comes into my office with religious acitivties or beliefs on them.
Plus, we have a 6 month probation period. Anyone seen with a copy of the "wholly babble" or preaching to co-workers soon finds himself on the unemployment line.
No room for idiots in the real world.

A parasitic one, where it fills the heads of the gullible with fears that only it can save them from, and in turn extracts from them the financial sustenance it needs to inflate its conceited sense of self importance.
