pace walking (walking fast) burns almost the same amount of calories as a treadmill would but it's much easier on your joints (especially the knees and hips)

plus, with the walking you get the benefits of being out in the fresh air and enjoying your environment which can also reduce stress which is great for your health!!

Apparently there is some truth in the statement I have heard. You would cover slopes and hills automatically going up or down them.

You would be going at your pace fast slow or whatever, not at set routine speeds by the treadmill.

1 obvious advantage is, unless you have a treadmill at home, it would be cheaper than going someplace to use a treadmill.

Gyms don't always come cheap and then there maybe a membership. Then the waiting while someone else has finished using it. Of course the gym instructor might set you a program for you to achieve on good days fine on down days not so easy.

Though you would meet up make friends while there who would encourage you.

I belong to a gym and costs + making time to go is a burden not been for ages but then I cycle a lot and this area I am in is quite hilly (That's Wales for you) and I can cycle them.

Depends what your goals are, yes walking is great getting outside and is less stressful on the joints etc. But if you are looking to lose weight fast, interval training on a treadmill is so much better. However interval training can be done outside too, try walking for 5 min then jog for 1, then the next week do 4 min walk the jog for 2 and so on.........the benefit doing interval training on a treadmill are: no rain, treadmills have sprung bases so less impact on joints, easier to record resuls (calories, distance etc) and joining a gym is a great way of meeting people.

Treadmills are great when the weather is yucky outside. The treadmill will work different muscles than if you walked outside, so you can do both. With the treadmill you can adjust the incline and adjust the speed to get a better workout.

I've heard that fast walking is as good as running on a treadmil. Both my parents used to be weight lifters, and they say idealy running and swimming burn the most calories. But, if you fast walk it does about the same.
