Watch "Back to the Future" again for a pretty good discussion of the whole "kill your parents" time travel scenario.
There are 3 possible solutions--
1) Time travel is Impossible. If you can't ever go back, you can't put your own existence in danger.
2) You can go back, but having gone back is already woven into the fabric to the past, meaning you were meant to go back all along. This means you would be unable to kill yourself or your parents becase they had to have survuved your actions for you to be there in the first place.
3) You can go back with an uzi and blaze away on yourself and every one you love. Hoever, there are an infinite number of unviverses branching from every "decision point" in time. By changing the past you merely cause an alternate universe to branch away from that point--one where you don't exist, one where you do.
From what I've read, theoretical time travel is going to require astronomical amounts of energy, rotating wormholes, or other unachieveable items. Its not like Star Trek, where time travel is as easy as going out for burgers.

by doing this theoretically you would create a paradox if you did go back in time and kill yourself you could not go back in time and do it because you were dead however if you were dead you could not go back in time and kill yourself.
Scienctists have long discussed what would happen if this was possible one view is you can not change history as it has already happened so even if you tryed to kill yourself you would fail as you exist in the present.
Another opinion and generally wider excepted is the infinite number of paraell dimensions that co exist by going back in time you and killing yourself you would create an alternate reality in an alternative dimension the future you originated from would remain the same, however the reality you have created would also exist any attempt to return to the your future would be impossible only the future where you no longer exist.
You would require a dimension travelling machine not a time machine.

not true. killing your self in the past will not erase your current existence.
your current existence has something like an absolute value in mathematics.
even if you killed your self then, it would not undo you now.
it would only alter the foward time line from the point of your death.
You would still exist but everything you remember would never have happened.
You would in affect be, a man with out a past.
all this begs a far more interesting question however, .
how do you what you remember actually happened at all?

I would never kill myself...
If I could travel back in time, I would look for my grandfather's missing last will and testament. Then I would hide it in a safe place where I could easily find it in the future.
That way, I could save my family from all the hassles we had encountered. Maybe I would be able to go to a law school and my father would not get weak...

If time travel is to be invented, where are the time travelling tourists?
And assuming this was possible, and if you're to be the creator of a new music genre (let's say "Disco-Country", for example), please, please go back in history to knock some sense into yourself (all things being otherwise equal, the sad truth is that you probably won't believe yourself, but this is another story).
And thanks for saving a few couples of Dodos while you're there.
> Could you travel back in time and kill your past self?

Correct. It would be like matter meeting anti--matter, in mutual anihalation.
The event would still have occurred, though, so don't worrry that one self could not have then gone back in time. the entire Timeline would change, and neither of your selves would have existed, in either one.

ah, the old time-paradox thingie again, and in the least original fashion....
If I found a way to go back in time (and return to the present), I'd buy old money in the present, let's say 100 years old, go back to the years it was used and put it all in the bank and then return to present time and collect the interest over 100 years...
more useful than killing anyone...

I don't think humans are smart enough to make a time machine in the future.
