The general idea behind most forms of cancer treatment today (both radiation and chemotherapy) is to stress the cancerous cells to the point of death.

The general thought is that healthy cells can withstand just a little more than cancerous cells, therefore these treatments attempt to kill the 'weak' or cancerous cells.

Not pleasant, but it's the best we've got so far.

Radiation can stop replication of fast growing cancer cells.

Radiation stops the cell division in mitosis, and so stops growth of the tumor in some cases.
