Most businesses, when backing up data, use a method in which they back up everything once a week, usually to tape. When a file is backed up, its attribute is set to Archive. During the week, if the file is opened and changed, its attribute is cleared. Each night only the files that have changed are backed up, and the attribute changed backed to Archive. This saves on time and tapes when doing backups. Then at the end of a week, everything is backed up again.

Hi,
There are three file attributes in earlier windows : Hidden, Archive, Read Only. But now in Windows XP there are two : Hidden and Read Only. But even at this you can archive your files. Archive means to keep updating a particular file over which you are working without creating a duplicacy of same data in the file. Attribute Archive saves time and duplicacy of same data entered.
I hope you will understand and like my answer.
bye

It is mainly used in Backup of files. (Windows' BK and most of the third party BK softwares.

After the backup operation, the Archive attribute is removed.
The attribute is re-added when the file is modified.
in next BK, BK program find the files with A attribute and back them up.
newly created files are added archive attribute automatically.
