Do cats actually understand spoken language or do they learn to associate certain words with certain things? i.e 'dinner' with food being about to be served.

What puzzles me is that my cat seems to greet me 'Hello' when she has not seen me for a while.

HI there...cats understand tonal inflections in general rather than the human spoken language. For instance if someone said "meal time" in a high pitch then said "free rhyme" with the same inflections in their pitch cats would process this as one in the same. The also associate patterns with our spoken language as well. They can however understand our spoken language if words are paired with something that is very rewarding to them. Isn't associating a word with an object understanding spoken language?

Cats are vocal creatures and as such, seem to have the ability to grasp certain human vocalizations such as a few words and phrases combined with the tone you say them in to her. I doubt your cat understands an entire conversion though she probably likes being talked to.

Cats are very big on manners and she IS greeting you when she has not seen you for a while. Cats who know eachother will also run and greet eachother when they have not had contact for a few hours or days.
