Just do an upgrade. You have the XP disc I assume? Well once you have booted up Windows 98 put the disc in and it will bring up the window saying what do you want to do? Upgrade which is always recommended. All your files will be there when it is done.

Dual booting is always available.
However, to use only single Operating system, you need to first take the back-up of the entire Op.Sys, and store the back-up of the file in one of the drives for safety precautions.
Now, insert the Win XP CD in the drive and upgrade the Op.Sys from Win 98 to Win XP and the Operating System and boot files will bedefaultly stored in the main drive which is the drive C:\ and all the MBR(Master Boot Record) files will be stored in the drive C:\
Once you upgrade the Op.sys, it is required to upgrade few other softwares. However, Microsoft Office need to be reinstalled again. When you upgrade Win 98 to Win XP, only the windows document will be updated succesfully and if you have any existing access files, you may lose which is why I suggest you take the back-up of the computer and store it in a different drive and upgrade the Op.sys in the default drive with which you will have most of the data saved on the computer and the remaining under the back-up file.

Well, the double boot is the best option, but you say you don't want to do this.

You could [a] copy and paste all the software files on to the "D" drive , if you've got enough space ... in fact you could copy the whole "C" drive and do this. [b] Then you could install XP on the "C" Drive where it'll install by default. [c] Once this is done, you'll need to reinstall all the software, to run with XP, all over again. [d] You'll even need to load you motherboard and peripheral drivers all over again. Incidentally, this is something that you'd need to do even if you were going to opt for double boot.

All the best.

Cheers

Well nothing will happen really. Just keep the partition as fat32. Windows 98 works with Fat32 file system . When u'll install win xp it will prompt you to change the file system to ntfs, delete the files or keep it as fat 32. Choose the option "keep it as fat32". No files will be deleted. however whatever u have installed using the installation command(setup) wont work as they wont be registered with this new os. So u need to install them again. Howevere ur data file, songs, photograph wont be deleted

Folow this whilst u have the two 98SE and XP boot Cd's If u have a XP boot CD u can definitely partition for the two. carry on with this steps: insert the Xp cd in the cd force and boot the equipment whilst it asks for setting up force , delete the drves u prefer to apply. then create partition . pick atleast 4.0 GB for ninety 8 and six.0 GB for XP as separate drives C: and D: do not format there, reason it is going to ak to opt for the force for XP setting up now restart the equipment by making use of pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del then insert the 98SE cd and initiate up setting up. format the C: force that's 4.0 Gb and setting up the Win98SE. end the setting up. ultimately insert the XP cd in force mutually as Win98 is working(which skill inspite of each and every thing setting up and laptop is working) and choose New setting up in the determination (it is going to advise replace selection do not opt for that) Then u gets 2 boot recommendations and it will setting up the XP and this is going to be achieved. u can opt for the two of the OS and have relaxing. do not setting up 98SE after XP . First setting up 98SE and then XP( its important) on account that domicile windows are backward properly suited.

I don't think you can do this. You would have to format your hard drive and then load XP. Afterwards reinstall your software though some of it may not like XP or vice cersa.
