Would you consider it an appropriate statement in mixed company?

Don't get your singulars and plurals mixed up. I didn't say a pregnant woman expects babies; I said pregnant WOMEN expect babies.

Actually this sentence is correct as it stands. It talks about pregnant women (not a pregnant woman). So if the number of women is plural, it would have to be babies. (a child can't have 2 mothers giving birth to it... yet).

Nothing wrong in saying this in mixed company.

Nothing impolite that I can see. In the interests of accuracy it could be "Pregnant women always expect A baby".

I wouldn't say it in mixed company...

Only because you never know someones past...

What if a woman has just had a miscarriage recently and you didn't know about it... Or you say it to the man whose wife just had a miscarriage or a still born birth, etc.

Actually they expect to become a MOTHER.Whatever maybe the number of baby(ies).She becomes what she has wanted to be.

That is why they call them expectant, yes I would qualify that statement.

That's not true! They only expect babIES if they are expecting twins or triplets or more.
