Buy a pictorial guide, make sure it's an extensive one and if you have any doubt.... Fry not that fungi !

There's supprisingly few poisonus mushrooms growing in the UK, although there's certainly a few that would not be good for you, there are just one or two that WILL kill you, with no antidote... Hence the need for caution.

A good staring point is here :

Buy a book with all the different types of mushrooms. This is not really the place to describe or tell which or which not you can eat.

This is not a job for an amateur unless you want to risk killing yourself by picking and eating the deadly mushrooms. Best join a club of experts and go with them to learn how to identify and cook and eat the safe ones. I understand they are delicious too.

DON'T EVEN TRY! The only safe mushroom you can count on are puff-ball mushrooms and unless you can identify them in the early stages, you are taking chances. All puff-ball mushrooms are edible, but some of them taste nasty.

There are thousands of regularly harvested edible mushrooms in the world, in addition to literally hundreds of thousands of other potentially edible species.

Here is a list of a whole lot of edible mushrooms with pictures for identification:

If you don't know how to tell, you'd better not pick them. Buy them from a shop. If someones willing to show you it can be picked up fairly quickly. We have some really poisonous fungi/toadstool in the UK.

Oh and don't think using a book will help, don't listen to some of the answers that say this - town dwellers no doubt.
