Armies all over the globe today are using assault rifles as their main weapons. In the old days, swords are their main choice for a battle. Is it a good idea for a soldier to bring with them a shorter-smaller version of sword nowdays just as a backup weapon?I don't think a bayonet is enough. What do you guys think about this?

No. I don't think that issueing a sword is worth it. The training required to become proficient with a sword, any size sword, is greater than that needed to use a knife (bayonet), thus increasing training time and cost.

A bayonet is designed to be used for a variety of functions, from can/MRE/letter/box opener to digging tool, to fighting weapon. A small sword can only be used as a weapon.

The weight of a bayonet is minimal, but a small sword carries some weight. Service members already are carrying up to 70 lbs of equipment, and a sword would just increase that, making them less mobile, slower, and better targets.

There are other reasons, but those are the quick three that I came up with.

Considering the vast majority of battlefield conflicts are now down at the push of a button or the long-range killing of mechanised warfare, soldiers rarely get close enough to each other to actually consider using these sorts of inplements.

The Bayonet is small, compact and deadly when needed, a sword would just limber down a soldier who is already overcrowded with his full Battle-gear

I think it only weighs down the soldier, having to keep a long and sharp thing like that and having always to guard it t make sure he doesn't get injuries from it (if he wears it old style)

I think handguns are more better as a backup.

Obviously, you've never served in the military before. With proper training and techniques, a dagger is just as deadly.

But then again, if you are anywhere that close, you are pretty much dead.

Um, you've been beat to the punch, that's what the knives are for. My hubby bought a Navy SeAL knife as his choice of blade for just in case.
