My little one is 19 mths. Two nights ago she climbed out of her cot, by the foot of it , the bars are up fully and the base is as low as possible.I'm going to buy her a bed.Is she too young?
I will be getting her a full sized single bed as they are cheaper than the toddler sized beds and will last me that bit longer. But what about covers etc duvet or her baby blankets? Etc any body in this position before. Advice is much appreciated.

its a very exciting time for you and her. she is growing up so big, but with that comes a bit of worry, i know. she is the same age as my daughter was when we bought her the ikea extendible bed. its been great. it is wider than her cot but only a little longer. it will extend to full size when she is ready for it. so for the time being she is still using her cot quilt that shes had since birth, but using a single bed fitted sheet - which is far too large (so i just tuck it in loads) but will be fine when its extended. i got a tomy bedrail for the beginning when i worried she might fall out, but she never did. if you get a full-sized bed you can tuck the quilt in halfway down the bed so she doesnt travel all the way under (which is what i was afraid of with a full-sized quilt). put teddies/dolls at the space at the top so she doesnt feel a bit weird with so much space above her. if you are concerned about the full-sized quilt you could just use a couple of light blankets tucked in until shes a little bigger. you could stitch a couple of her baby blankets together so that she is comforted by them rather than get too much new bedding - although going out specially to buy one new quilt set (dora, disney princesses etc) is a really great bonding time, and you can tell her that you are buying it as a treat, and she must remember to stay in bed all night. good luck. its really lovely to see them fast asleep in their brand new bed. they enjoy the space so much. i love seeing my little one in all her funny positions - upside down, sideways etc. she really takes advantage of the big bed. good luck

At 19 months a single bed is fine! Make sure you get bed guards and you may want to buy a protective, plastic sheet to go under the sheet (to avoid wet a mattress). A duvet would also be fine, as she's old enough to kick it off if it goes on her face. You can get some lovely girly beds and duvet covers - maybe she'd like to help you choose! If you involve her, she will feel like a 'big' girl and will be less likely to make a fuss about not being in her cot. But be warned, you're in for some nocturnal visits!

It appears to be time for a bed. Most children are ready for a bed by the time they are a year old - give or take depending how mobile they are. Sheets and or baby blankets are fine - a duvet is too but you might not want to yet until she is a bit older just for your own peace of mind. Sides for the bed may not be any use because she is too mobile what with climbing out the cot. She should be fine if she is walking - just teach her how to slide out the bed if she is determined to escape.

Boy does that bring back memories. Our youngest daughter gave us a big start when she did the same thing at 18 months. I was dead scared she'd splat on the floor doing it, and there was no way to keep her in the crib short of making a lid for the thing. We hadn't planned on getting a bed for her that quickly, and the budget wouldn't take the earlier purchase. Our solution was to remove the mattress from the crib, and put it on the floor. The crib went to the attic, as it was useless at that point. I just made the bed up as usual, with the sheets and such. I used some huge safety pins to keep the duvet and blankets attached to the bottom- I stuck them on the underside and had the hubbie cover them over with duct tape to prevent her removing them. We pushed the mattress into a corner of the room, which eliminated two sides to roll off of. A few months later we purchased a single size bed and a side rail that slid under the mattress to prevent her rolling out. I don't know if the time sleeping on the floor helped any, but she never did roll out of the bed and eventually demanded we remove the side rail- about the time she turned 2. It waited another 6 months, before she yanked it out and informed us she didn't need or want baby bars(as she called it) on her bed anymore. I put a pile of pillows on the side, just in case- but they were never needed. Eventually I relaxed, as I really had no other choice. I figured the drop from the single bed wasn't as far as the leap from the crib had been, and she survived that well enough. It was all a surprise for us, as our other children (3 older) had stayed in their crib until they were moved to single beds at around 3 years old. We had two boys to follow the crib escapee, and the youngest did the same trick at about 20 months as well. We were back to the mattress on the floor, but I found a toddler bed at a garage sale for $10 the following week. But had I not found it, we were planning to use the old method.

I put my son into a big bed a month ago-he was 20 months then. We had a big goodbye to his cot, he wasn't too sure about the big bed ( he is on the bottom bunk, whilst his sister is on top bunk) but after 2 nights of 'practice' it went fine. He has a normal duvet and pillow and i bought a fold away bed guard to stop him falling. The only problem now is he gets up and down constantly! At least he's getting up and down safely- i was terrified he'd fall out of his cot! The other option i toyed with is one of those travel cots- they're ok for a short while and they cant climb out of them.

My little boy used to climb out of his cot too. I bought him a single bed and for the first few nights i let him sleep on the mattress on the floor, so he would get used to being in a "big bed". Then i put the mattress back on the bed and he loves having a big bed! He didn't have sides on it, i just put a pillow on the floor next to the bed just incase he fell out but luckily he didn't. I got him a new duvet, with his favourite cartoon character on it and he loved sleeping in it. Good luck!

hiya
my little girl was the same she got out of her cot and really hurt her self
you can use a summer duvet low tog also a sheet if she gets to hot no pillow intill she is over the age of 1
i would put a duvet on the floor right next to the bed because at that age the do fall out alot even with the safty bed side thingys
i found my little girl once asleep in the middle of the floor
good luck :o)

she is growing up! if shes already climbing out of her cot then there is not alot you can do to stop her.lowering the bars on the cot in the mean time might prevent injuries, if she is climbing out already then you may as well make it safer for her to do so. i think a single duvet would be quite safe as long as you tuck her in at the bottom of the bed so she cant wriggle too far down. Also the recommended age for a child to start using a pillow is 3 years old.

No, she is not too young at all. Most kids climb out by 18 months and some alot sooner. You need a bed NOW and buy regular twin bed sheets. She can still use the blankets since she is still small.

She's ready for a bed - it would be safer than her climbing/falling out of her cot. a duvet will be fine - they say don't use duvets for babies under 12 months. I never had bars on the bed for either of my first two - yes they fell out a couple of times but they soon learn not too!
