You don't need to ask me twice (I'm not deaf)!....He's actually a mascot for the Homosexual community. But, to answer your question, he's supposed to be a Sea Sponge creature. Back to my analysis, though:
The reason why the Homos like Spongebob is because he exhibits feelings of tenderness, and he allegedly held hands with another male character.
I'm not gay! Don't give me any grief about how I know this crap. I just hear things, that's all.

As it turns out SpongeBob is indeed an animal. Or most sea sponges are....
A gay sponge..hmmmm.. biologically speaking they are unisexual. Is that the same as homosexual? I dont know.

I think he's meant to represent a seasponge, which does exist in real life, but a seasponge is not an animal, it's a plant.
