A riot is never appropriate.
Rallies and such, as long as peaceful are fine.
If you want to remove someone from power, the proper way in a Democratic society is by petition/recall or at the ballot box.
If you can't win at the ballot box, you have no right to violence (rioting) and should be dealt with as the common criminal that you must be to resort to it.

Rallies and riots are proper methods to express protests only if approved by the government and do not disturb the peace and order of the place where held. Violence and unrests made during the rallies are not good for the democratic process but instead contribute to the downfall of the democracy.

Don't let them lie to you, democracy is about peaceful DISPUTE RESOLUTION, and riots are pretty much the opposite of that idea.

However, this only hold true for a place that is already a DEMOCRACY.

If the government where these things are occuring is more of a TYRANNY, then yes, riots do facilitate the attainment of DEMOCRACY by publically expressing the wills of the people and their level of oppression, see the student riots in China a decade or so ago.
