would like advice on what to do i think my old laptop cant handle win xp and wonder if there is an inexpensive alternative to buying a new computer

if ur laptop has usb slot..
try this...

copy the whole content of the 98 cd installer in usb memory drive (512 mb)...

then start seting up by placing the usb drive to the slot.

during start-up, insert a bootable Win98 CD... then, you can now install new operating system on your computer...
your laptop can't hanle winXp maybe because your hardware is not compatible with WinXp OS.. WinXP needs high end hardware , at least Pentium 300 with 128 MB of Ram...and a at least 10GB of HDD memory

check the harware configuration of your PC...

I would put a free distro of Linux on it. It would be more secure (no viruses) and up-to-date (windows 98 will not be supported by microsoft for much longer).

Google Linux+your laptop model.

Also, put "Open Office" (free MS Office replacement) and "GIMP" (PhotoShop replacement, free) and you are good to go.
