I am not sure which kind of hernia you have, so i am telling you both kinds.
Most inguinal hernias happen because an opening in the muscle wall does not close as it should before birth. That leaves a weak area in the belly muscle. Pressure on that area can cause tissue to push through and bulge out. A hernia can occur soon after birth or much later in life.
You are more likely to get a hernia if you are overweight or you do a lot of lifting, coughing, or straining. Hernias are more common in men. A woman may get a hernia while she is pregnant because of the pressure on her belly wall.
What are the symptoms?
The main symptom of an inguinal hernia is a tender bulge in the groin or scrotum. It often feels like a round lump. The bulge may form over a period of weeks or months. Or it may appear all of a sudden after you have been lifting heavy weights, coughing, bending, straining, or laughing. Some hernias cause a bulge but no pain.
A hernia also may cause swelling and a feeling of heaviness, tugging, or burning in the area of the hernia. These symptoms may get better when you lie down.
Sudden pain, nausea, and vomiting are signs that tissue may have become trapped in the hernia. Call your doctor if you have a hernia and have these symptoms.
How is an inguinal hernia diagnosed?
A doctor can usually know if you have a hernia based on your symptoms and a physical exam. The bulge is usually easy to feel.
How is it treated?
Most people with hernias have surgery to repair them, even if they do not have symptoms. This is because surgery can prevent strangulation, a serious problem that occurs when tissue gets trapped inside the hernia.
But you may not need surgery right away. If the hernia is small and painless and you can push it back into your belly, you may be able to wait.
Babies and young children are more likely to have tissue get trapped in a hernia. If your child has a hernia, he or she will need surgery to repair it.
Some people wear supports (trusses or corsets) to hold their hernias in. A support might let you delay surgery. But these supports can press too hard and trap tissue in the hernia. Talk to your doctor before wearing one.
A hernia may come back after surgery. To reduce the chance that this will happen, stay at a healthy weight. Do not smoke, avoid heavy lifting, and try not to push hard when you have a bowel movement or pass urine.
Sports hernia
A sports hernia is an injury of the inguinal area caused by repetitive twisting and turning at high speed. This type of hernia occurs mainly in people who play ice hockey, soccer, and tennis.
Although the condition is known as a hernia, in many cases an obvious hernia is not seen. The main symptom is groin pain that may reach into the genital area. The pain can linger for weeks or months. Sports medicine experts think that the condition results from overuse of groin muscles, which causes stress on the inguinal wall.
A sports hernia can be difficult to diagnose. Often an athlete has had lingering groin pain for months. A health professional may note inguinal tenderness but find no bulge of tissue. To help diagnose a sports hernia, the athlete may be asked to perform maneuvers, such as sit-ups, to see whether they cause pain.
Resting the groin muscles for several weeks sometimes can resolve the problem, but in many cases surgery is needed to reinforce the inguinal wall. Competitive athletes may prefer to have surgery right away to resolve the problem.1
