Death threat is a crime punishable under the Penal Law. Even if it is made online as long as the purpose of the threat was achieved.

Hello, It is illegal to make a death threat in any form. Note: Thought you might find this interesting lately I have heard of several cases involving various law breaking instances where the purported criminal has gotten off. Why, because their attorney successfully argued there was no proof his client actually did the typing! It could have been another family member, a friend, a intruder. Sounds weak to me too, but they are winning. Thanks for allowing to pass along my two cents worth. God Bless You and the Southerner People.

Yes. It can also be seen as a terrorist threat. Immature behavior that leads to online death threats are punishable by time in jail and fines. And it is easy for someone to record your IP address so that they know who said what.
