Tanning brings out the pigments in your skin and adds a bit of colour. If we didn'd tan at all we'd all be sickly pale. You also need to get at least ten minutes of sun a day because you get vitamin D from sunlight and you need that to stay healthy. A lot of people think a tan is sexy, but if you get too much sun it can damage your skin.

Some people think it makes them look a little healthier to look like they've gotten some outdoors.
Not all white people want a tan, though. Some people are ok with their complexion as it is.

I'm Black American female and I've been wondering the same thing. If too much sun is damaging and "the officials" stress wearing sunblock-I don't understand why you would want to sit out in the sun and fry like a piece of bacon. I seen a very tan white chick with blond hair-she looked scary. She looked like Cameron Diaz's best friend on "There's Something About Mary." I also don't understand the whole tanning bed thing. I would be scared to lay down in that 'coffin' just to change my skin color. That smells like cancer to me!

I have been wondering the same thing... I am white... and I dont tan... I am VERY pale and I actually like it, makes me different I guess, I guess people do it because they look more alive and "brighter".. and because famous people do it.. lol

because some of us look beter with a little more color to us as to where we are not so pale looking. and sometimes it just make you feel better about yourself.
