Because in the days when people couldn't write, they signed their name with a cross. Then they kissed it, as an oath. Like people kissed a religious icon. And after a while, it came to mean a kiss.

I think it is because it's meant to look like two lips kissing..
Lip 1 > < and lip 2 hence they have come together for a kiss and are now X

Well, if you ask me I think we should re-write the rule book here, keep the x if it's a family member but a P if it's a gf, wife ect....

Cause back in the days when thickos signed their names with an X, some signed their own death warrants then said No that was just a kiss. Makes no sense i know

People's noses get in the way when kissing (unless you're and Eskimo, they rub noses instead of kissing) so you angle your head which make your lips form an X.
