The 5 original "nuclear" nations are USA, China, Britain, France and Russia, who originally signed the non-proliferation treaty.

Those nations that have subsequently aquired a nuclear capability include India, Pakistan, Israel (who kinda deny everything of course & they could be US in origin) and N. Korea (although we're not sure if that last test was a failure or not ... )

Other countries may have nuclear weapons that were developed elsewhere.

Iran may want to be on the list, but aren't technically at the moment.

Just saw an interesting documentary about how Israel & Iran might go head-to-head on this if Iran do go further towards a nuclear capability ... scary!

Countries known to posses nuclear weapons:

US, UK, France, Russia, China, India, and Pakistan. Each of these countries has conducted confirmed nuclear tests.

North Korea has apparently conducted a test, this is still debateable, but it appears they will join the above list.

Countries believed to posses nuclear weapons.
Israel. This belief is pretty much universal, despite no confirmed tests or admission by Israel. They certainly would appear to have the capability of creating such weapons.

Countries that may have given up nukes
South Africa. Apparently dismantled entire nuclear arsenal in 1990's. Not quite sure what to make of this.

Iran does not have nukes, Yet.

Many, many other countries have had nuclear progams attempting to develope weapons at one time or another. Most were not particularly successful, most have been shut down.

US developed the first nuclear weapons in WWII and dropped two in Japan. That happened in 1945.

Other countries include Russia(1949), UK(1952), France(1960), China(1964), India(1974), Pakistan(1998), and North Korea(Oct. 2006).

America, Britain, France, Russia, Israel, India and Pakistan - and now apparently North Korea. I think some former Soviet states have nuclear weapons on their soil but they have pledged to get rid of them, and there are a number of developed countries which have the means to develop them but have promised not to do so.

Why only countries?, When these days, and or soon armed organizations will also acquire nuclear weapons. It will be more accessible, easy to follow instruction to build one, hiring low incomes Russian and soon U.S. scientists. I meant. Get ready.
