You can't possibly get cancer through sexual contact. Body to body spreading of cancer could be done with an organ transplant. But even that is not likely.

Thyroid cancer is not contagious. My 14 yr. old daughter has it. There are 4 types of thyroid cancer; papillary, follicular, medullary and anaplastic. There are several variants of papillary thyroid cancer, such as columnar, tall cell and follicular variants. They still react as papillary, yet they appear different under a microscope.

Thyroid cancer is known to be caused by being exposed to radiation, such as in the years where they used to treat the tonsils and acne (imagine that) with radiation. BUT, there are also other causes that have not been pinpointed. Thyroid cancer can be familial, meaning that it seems to run in families. Medullary is the type that is most associated with familial cause. Papillary and follicular are very responsive to treatment when detected early. Medullary is a bit more involved and aggressive, but also treatable. Anaplastic is most often associated with death.

But, don't worry, it is not contagious AT ALL. There is no great way to prevent it other than stay away from radioactive iodine (which is easy to do!) and do not receive radiation to the neck/throat area, which no one does now anyway. Hope this helps a little.

No, thyroid cancer is not contagious....however, contrary to what many people have posted here, although no cancer itself is contagious, there are some viruses that CAUSE cancer that are contagious, such as the Human Papilloma Virus, or genital warts. HPV is transmitted sexually and can cause cervical cancer in women and less commonly penile cancer in men. However, as I said above, this is not the case with thyroid cancer.
