Absolutely would report it and have. Shoplifters add to the cost we pay per item at any store, so I say go to jail jerks.
I watched a man stuff cartons of cigarettes under his jacket when I was a teen. He was in line in front of me at Kmart and I walked up to the manager and told her. They held up the line and took their time checking us all out and then arrested him outside. I was smiling for days knowing I did the right thing.

Hell no, I ain't no snitch.
You people really need to quit prying into other people's lives!
Essex Ron, you have never lived in poverty have you? If those thieves had the money do you believe that they would still shoplift? Maybe if it's a teenager of a family with enough money to eat 3 square meals a day trying to do something for an adrenaline rush. But those kind of people are the ones that are let off the hook anyways
Richard, I didn't know shoplifting was an extreme crime, oh wait it isn't unless it is something worth over $500 (which would be behind glass cases anyways)
Placing a bomb is a felony, shoplifting is misdemeanor big difference. If someone placed a bomb on a plane the first thing I would do would be to report it, If someone were to steal a pack of gum I couldn't care less

Some people even have an addiction to shoplifting, kind of like kleptomania. They will steal just to steal. Go from store to store each day. For the rush, the high. They don't need the stuff. They just need the rush. The thrill of getting away with it. The goods just pile up on their house. It's a sick addiction. They want something for nothing. As if society owes it to them. And when and if they get caught, they cry that it's their first time, they've never shoplifted before and swear they'll never do it again.
So...yes, if I see someone shoplifting, I'll report it. I turned in one of our foster girls once, she was shopping with me and I knew she was stealing, sure enough, they watched her and they busted her.

Yes, I would. If you have no morals, I would see why someone would keep quiet, but kinda think of an extreme situation. If someone was to put a Bomb on a plane and you knew about it, would you alert the authorities? I would hope so! I know stealing and putting a Bomb are two separate extremes, but my point is they are both crimes and should be reported. People will tend to lie to themselfs, and make up a excuse to make what there doing seem justified, but it's not! Just stand up for what you believe in!!

No. Why? Because the store should have taken all the appropriate measures to ensure that no shoplifting is possible. (ie installing cameras and all that). However, if I saw someone picking somebody's pocket, or stealing anything from an individual I would tell.

Security doesn't have to witness the act of shoplifting, they just have see them take the item(s) passed the last point of payment without paying. And yes, I've alerted security to someone shoplifting and I'd do it again. I could care less how poor someone is, there are alternatives to stealing. No one has the right to take something that doesn't belong to them.

The store security guard has to personally see the shoplifting incident themselves before they can prosecute, so reporting it would have no effect unless the person continues shoplifting.

There is only one answer here - report it.
Anyone who answers differently is not a part of society. You need to think it through to its logical conclusion.
If everyone shoplifted (ie stole) instead of paying there would be no shops. We cannot allow a minority to live by one set of rules while the rest of us subsidise them.
The same applies to gypsies and squatters - on the face of it it is great to opt out of society, its obligations and responsibilities. But the problem is, for everyone who does, there are a group of others who have to sponsor it.
No - never mind about being Buddhist, worried about their associates etc etc - what you are doing and saying is that you are not prepared to play your part in the society you live in.
Most of us do.

Oh my freaking lord!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe that this many people would ignore how they were raised! For those above me that would choose to nothing when they saw a wrong committed SHAME ON YOU! I am not a saint but f you choose to allow someone to forsake the wisdom that was instilled in them, shame. You are given a code when you were born. If your parents allowed you to behave as an a$$ then your parents should be punished. NOW lets be honest stealing food so you can survive is one thing but to allow theft for no reason other than survival. You thoughtless FKs. As a businesses owner stealing from me is the equivalent of taking food from the mouths of my children. Why would it be OK to take that which is not yours for any reason other than survival. I hate thief's! I work my a$$ of for what is mine and my families and for you to think for a minute take it just because you can steal it it makes it right? How can you justify it. To expose your idle care in justifying that if it is from a store its OK, do you people understand that an individual might own the store, that maybe I worked my whole life, honestly to come up with the $$ to buy my own business, I somehow am less than someone getting their pocket picked, I should be held at fault. Shame. And for the smart *** that said it is my fault that I was stole from because I should have cameras and what not.... Seriously you think that I should diswade you from stealing by my security, how about you step up and behave like a honest individual. Cameras should not keep you honest, morals should keep you being the person that you should be! Again I am no saint but after being 8 years old I learned RESPECT for others.

Problem is too many people want to ignore someone breaking the law.Yes you should report it and you can do so discretely.Remember when people steal, it does hurt you in the long run.Companies have to raise their prices to compensate for the losses due to theft. If you turn in a thief, you save money.
