i havent known him for long and almost every conversation we have he mentions one of these three, he seems happy enough and is kind and sweet, not bitter but he doesnt talk alot ive noticed, but when i talk about somthing to do with me he seems genuinely interested and he always reasures me that his mood is not because of me, he also compliments me and holds eye contact with me. Is he opening up to me in a way or trying to tell me he is not interested i cannot be sure either way!

Maybe he's just going through a faze. Maybe you can try to cheer him up, with some silly story or crazy dancing. We all get down in the dumpies!

what home life do they have?
you see, many factors make up a persons personality, and food is an important one. inproper diet can cause low self esteem through low electolytes, vitamins & minerals.
home life can be the cause of many a sad life.
or maybe its because they prefer to get attention for being a sad case, rather than on other merits. people love 'poor me's' and maybe he is just an emotional leech that is only after your pity.
tell him to shut the hell up, as its affecting you. you see, depression can be a spreading disease, as one person makes another feel gloomy, etc.
