Participating in a clinical trial does have its risks. The level of risk will depend on the type of trial.

Phase 1 trials - performed on healthy individuals. Aim is to find out any toxic effects such as the maximum tolerated dose (keep increasing the dose until you feel sick) and how quickly the drug is cleared from your blood. These are very closely monitored as they are the first trials of the drug in humans and so the least is known about the drug.

Phase 2 trials - these are longer term studies, on people with the disease they are trying to treat, however the doctors are still trying to find out if there are any toxic effects

Phase 3 trials - these are the large (often 1,000s of patients) trials that will run for months or years where we find out if the drug does improve your condition.

Generally I would say that Canada has very good requirements for drug trials, but you should ask as many questions as you can about the drugs.

The safest drug trials are proabably those of generic drugs where a company is trying to show there drug is exactly like the one already amde by someone else.

Therer are also trials where they are looking to see how diet or life stype affects your health. In these studies you are monitored, but you don't take anything.
