is this normal? my nails, when you look at them from the side and very close, they are not smooth shaped, but in ridges. i'm not talking about from base to tim, but from side to side. like an accordeon that is folded out, not smooth.

Would depend a lot on the age.. but this sign is diagnostic in itself. If your doctor is not aware of this feature, bring it to his/her attention. If you get a nothing, better get a second opinion. If you have lower extremity edema, go see your doctor soon.

Yah that's why manicures were invented.
You need a buffer not as harsh as a nail file but looks similar.

It could be a lack of calcium in your diet. Make sure to drink milk and eat dairy.
