Skim milk powder is made from excess fresh milk that isn't sold on the day of milking.
Skim milk is basically powder and water... It should be much cheaper as the cost is low and the yield it high!
They are ripping us all off!

cream separation is doen normally using a centrifuge, its not particuarly expensive, its failry effective, other techniques can be separation by letting the liquid settle (this techniques doesn't qork in high volume plant (it takes time to settle))
think about it
if you put a known volume of liquid into a centrifuge [say1litre] (you draw off anywhere between 2 & 5% of the volume). would you as a consmer expect to buy between 950 & 980mml in a litre container, or course not. so there is more liquid going into your semi or skim milk, it costs more to produce sedmi & skim
the cost of the cream is a separate item, historically cream prices used to subsidise skim & Semi proces, but since the world became fat obssessed cream became a sink product, ie it is subsidised by milk slaes as their is more cream than the market wants.
Ive always found it hilarious and sad that the medics are incredibly keen on cutting out liquid milk (whoe fat content is normally around 3.8...4.2% [yes that is all the fat in milk] (5% or more in Channel Island), yet still blithely reccomended other fats.
as regards the cost of running a skim milk plant... now that is seriously expensive to install and run (think about it you are removing water from a liquid (milk is around 93..96% water) by spraying it into a column of hot air - take a lot of energy). Besides which it is no longer a significant by product skim milk is a product in its own right. Skim milk was effectively a waste product upto the 1970's, when it was often fed to livestock, but since then it has become a core product.

Processed = more money = less health
OK, this is maybe taking it too far for skimmed milk but goes well as a general rule.
Sabotage all these big industries by eating fresh and unprocessed foods. Not only will it save money but will save your health and the environment too. Don't fall for that 'less fat' crap. Open your eyes and learn to choose the right foods.
So who care if they overcharge us? I'd just find an alternative. Ever tried real fresh milk? Who wants that watered down stuff!

If its better for you its more expensive. Perhaps the cost of removing the cream only equals the cost of the sale of the cream. Or perhaps supermarkets are just trying to fleece us for every penny!

it costs the farmers the same to process - and then they sell the milk to the suppliers who add on their costs and profit, which is why the milk is the same price.
