People say it is ok to masturbate and yet their natural instinct is to hide the fact that they do it and to be embarrased if they are caught...

That seems like guilt to me. What do you think?

(and no, admitting to it on the internet doesn't count. the internet is the land of anonymity)

No one ever says, "Hey mom and dad, I'm going to go masturbate! I'll be back in a half hour."

I have the right to ask about whatever I want! If I want to ask 500 questions about masturbation then that is my right.

I'm impressed that you spelled "masturbation" correctly (you're in the top 2% of all Yahoo Q & Aers!)....The main reason why people don't like to admit to doing it is because it implies that they can't find someone to do "it" with. In our society, that's the biggest failure a person can have.

Wow. And I suppose you would rather have an audience when you're having sex with someone else? Or else, you must feel guilty for doing the act? It couldn't be because a person would want to be alone to do that... I mean, that's what Masturbation is, right? Being Alone? Or would you rather people constantly tell you their sexual habits? I mean, so many people get sooo upset over a person, online, having a seemingly homosexual nickname, yet you want us to masturbate in front of others? Discuss it with others?

BTW, I've never "hidden" to do it LOL That's just silly... that's like saying you hide to take a bath because you are embarrassed about your body.

I suggest you go live in a commune if you're into that whole "togetherness" thing like what you have displayed here. LOL

Funny story, and I'm not saying this to be crude, it's a valid response. When I was fourteen my parents had told me that it was okay and I shouldn't be ashamed of myself for masturbating. Then one day, being in a particularly stupid frame of mind, I did just what you described.

I was going up to my room when my mom asked where was I going, I said, "I'm going upstairs to masturbate. I'll be down in a while." Her jaw literally hit the floor, and my father went into an incredible laughing fit.

The reason why we don't talk about it like that is because it is a private and intimate act on a different level from most things like going to the bathroom. That's why we don't announce it, that and you can get arrested for doing that in public.

OK... I didn't read all of the posts on this yet, I'm just going to go out on the limb and tell you what I think...

The reason why people masturbate privately is because it is a sexual thing in nature, and sexual things are private. Now, sex is deemed "OK" by God if you are married, but are you going to go screaming to the hill tops that you just got laid by your husband??? I don't think so!!! Are you going to call your mom and dad every time before you go to bed and say, "Gonna start workin' on that Grandkid, now!" Some topics are just not open for polite conversation.

replace the word masturbation with some of these words:

pee

#2

shower

pass gas

??? you choose

Maybe...just maybe...people are not 100% social creatures. It just might be possible that some of our characteristics were just plain intended to be private. Why do you assume someone else has to be there during everything you do to validate that what you are doing is right? How is others' judgement of what you do more important than your own?

I think we were just made that way-to want to do some things alone. I think that someone that thinks everything they do has to be able to be done in public is denying the nature of who and what they are and how they were made. There are those among us that would think that it was sinful to sever the umblical cord. The real sin is in the person that taught you to feel guilty over something that is none of their business. One wonders what is going on in the mind of someone that thinks that everything someone else does should be watched.

The same reason people don't take showers, have sex, or change clothes in public. Some things are meant to be done in private. DOH! My dad walked in on me taking a sh*t and I was embarrassed. According to your logic, I must have felt guilty. Does that really make sense to you? Think before you ask questions sweetie. You're coming off as kind of an airhead.

Ah, the followup question!

Because it is having sex! Granted it is having sex with someone you should love and trust the most - yourself - but having sex, never the less. So sexual acts should be done in private, not to embarass or demean, but simply because that is what our society teaches. Natural functions sometimes are that way. We likewise do not relieve ourselves of bodily waste material in public, pick our noses, etc, in public. Right? Yet we all do those things.

Glad to be of help for you here.

Um, would you really want to walk into a restaurant and see everybody doing it, including your server and the cook?
There are just some things that should be done in private.

The same reason people have sex in private. It's an intimate act. You're naturally embarrassed if you're caught in the act of sex, right?
