There are many who believe that Genesis 1:2... represents a restoration of the earth after the destruction brought about by Satan, rather than the original creation. (This view resolves quite a number of conflicts with a "young earth" theory.)

Hence, with the earth and universe already in existence, a day/night cycle was already in motion, but apparently needed some repair.

There are a few questions, similar to yours, that could be asked about "creation week", that are better explained by a renewal rather than a new creation.

Yes that is a bit confusing to sort out.
On the first day God separated the light form the night. and called the light Day and the Darkness Night.
on the Fourth day God made two great lights ; the greater light (Sun,son) to rule the day and he lesser(Moon, female) to rule the night.
before that he started our idea of time measurement by this method to let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days, and years.Setting lights in the firmament to divide the day from the night.
